New Release

Shootout at Wadala Movie Recommendation
I wasn't intrigued by the film's trailer nor did the songs impress me enough to consider giving the film a chance. The action in the movie looks outstanding but I don't really understand the plot of the film. John Abraham seems to be giving a power-packed performance while the rest of the cast does the best to be supporting. So in reality this is an all John affair. I want to see how the item songs are intertwined because Ekta Kapoor is seamless in integrating music in her films. My recommendation is to wait until the movie shows on TV to watch it. I know the film did well over the opening weekend but I'm skeptical whether its really worth it.

Bombay Talkies Movie Recommendation
4 great directors celebrating 100 of Indian cinema with incredible performances from the lead actors doesn't need much to guarantee a watch from me. I'll recommend watching this in theaters since it is supposed to be a celebration of cinema itself. Idk which portion of the film I'm excited to see most but I don't think the movie will disappoint. I wish the movie was more filmi instead of artsy as that would truly be an apt depiction of Indian cinema that the Bollywood should take pride in. Indian cinema is about making the audience feel good about the overthetop lives of the characters seen on screen. The film opened well in multiplexes due to the artistic nature of the film.

#1 Recommended Album - Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Pritam)

Aurangzeb Music Review
So YRF finally released the music for the film. It's thematically based so really only Barbaadiyaan and maybe Jigar Fakira might end up on the charts. My favorites are definitely Barbaadiyaan for its popping party feel and Barbaadi for its haunting piano interludes and K Mohan's somber tone. The title song's chorus is also commendable but not worth buying as a single track. I would recommend buying the album after watching the movie and you like the theme music. It's kinda like 3 Idiots where not all the songs appealed prior to the movie but once you watch the movie it all makes sense as to why the music was released so late. If you're not planning on watching the movie then I would recommend only Barbaadiyaan and Barbaadi.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani Music Review
Badtameez dil badtameez dil badtameez dil maane na. Definitely the best song of the album! Pritam gave an earnest effort with this album but unfortunately it doesn't match the originality of last year's summer hit Cocktail. With that being said this album is still enjoyable and a definite buy for listeners. It is a complete album with a song for every occasion. My favorites are Badtameez dil, Balam Pichkari, Ilahi, Kabira (Reprise), Dilliwali Girlfriend and Subhanallah. So why didn't I like Kabira and Ghagra? The reprise of Kabira outshone the original, I still like the song but if I had to buy one I would buy the encore just for the filminess of the Indian instrumentation. Ghagra is alright I don't know why I didn't get that get up and dance feeling from the song. Maybe my mind will change when the promo releases kinda like what happened to Dilliwali Girlfriend. Speaking of Dilliwali I felt like the techno beats was ordinary and didn't give the song enough energy and variety to make it as good as Badtameez Dil. My recommendation is to buy the album, you will find at least one song that appeals to you immediately or the next few months as the songs become popular.

So this week was all Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. I couldn't get enough of the album. I still had a minor hangover from Aashiqui 2 but I'm certainly finding Yeh Jawaani as my repeat album. The title song of Yamla Pagla Deewana released- it is quite catchy. Since I've been late in writing this post the music has been already released today. Expect my full thoughts on it this weekend.

Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan performed in my home country of Guyana this weekend!

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy seems to be back big time after their hiatus (lack of work). I'm huge fans of them I don't know why they didn't have a few albums in the pipeline last year. Anyways, they are doing the music for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Highway, 2 States, Kill Dil and Salmon Khan's Kick!

I read somewhere that Deepika Padukone is opposite Salman in Kick? Deepika really is becoming the #1 Actress in the industry. I think their chemistry will be flirty fun to watch.

Salim-Sulaiman is doing the music for Krrish 3? I really wanted Rajesh Roshan to do this just because Salim-Sulaiman has been rehashing old tunes recently.

The first look of Milan talkies is out! Priyanka and Imran though? Isn't she too old for him?

Is A.R. Rahman's name less valuable than in 2008? I don't know why but after the Raanjhanaa trailer it seems like not that many people were excited to see Rahman doing the music for the film. Maybe it was because they are scarred from the Yash Chopra and Rahman combination failing to live up to expectations in Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Whatever it is I think it also applies to Himesh Reshammiya. There isn't that much excitement anymore when he is in charge of doing the music. Leave it to Priam though and everyone hobbles to get a tease as soon as an album of his launches. This raises the question is A.R. Rahman still in his prime? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

I think that's all for this week. I've had midterms and wrapping up the year with a lot of events. I'll still be able to write but it might be a little late in the next few weeks.

Random Bollywood Update - April 27 2013

Hello, I'm trying to do something different again where I try writing a mini newsletter type posts about what has been happening this week in Bollywood. I hope you enjoy the post and come back weekly for a new post.

New Release

Aashiqui 2 Movie Recommendation
Aashiqui 2 isn't really a sequel of Aashiqui but it follows up well in the premise of having newcomers, melodious songs, and innocent romance. The plotline does have similarities to Abhimaan but which film doesn't have similar things to other films. The trailer promises good acting and amazing cinematography to the smash-hit songs. The newcomers doesn't bring star value but the good reviews and positive acceptance from the audience means that the story and songs are the value to film. I'm on the fence about whether to recommend watching it in theater or on DVD, either way this is a must-WATCH release for the year.

Raanjhanaa Theatrical Trailer Review
Can this movie have one more A please? Jokes aside Dhanush looks like a perfect fit for his role while putting in a complete performance in the trailer. I was surprised to see Abhay Deol being featured in the movie while Sonam Kapoor looks graceful during the dance scene but I question how well she acts in the film. Cinematography and direction looks outstanding while the music is clasically splendid. Cannot wait for the A.R. Rahman music trailers!

Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya Theatrical Trailer Review
Go Desi Cool? I don't get it. The movie looks like an innocent rom-com with great choreography and cinematography by Prabhudeva. Girish Kumar looks like Aditya Roy Kapoor from Aashiqui 2. I don't understand his curly hair or why he is surfing then on a farm. Shruti Hassan looks pretty. And the Atif Aslam teaser songs especially the last one could give Tum Hi Ho a run for Song of the Year.

Hottest Song of the Week - Say Shava Shava (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham)
My Top 10 Bollywood Songs - See the entire list
#1 Recommended Album - Aashiqui 2

Aashiqui 2 is still my pick for the week. These songs are the perfect combination for a solid album. I've been hooked on Hum Mar Jayenge all week, Tulsi Kumar's delivery is amazing. Aurangzeb's finally released song is a smash-hit energetic track that should not be missed while Dilliwali Girlfriend is making Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani the next sought after album.

Gippi Music Review
Vishal-Shekhar rarely disappoints and with Gippi they keep that track record. The songs are young and peppy which is what the movie demands. Baby Doll and Pehn Di Takki are becoming my favorites, We Are Like This Only is also well done but I don't see myself singing. My recommendation is to SKIP the album and buy the single songs of either Baby Doll, Pehn Di Takki, or We Are Like This Only.

Random Talk

The Barbadiyaan trailer for Aurangzeb revealed one thing- Sasheh Agha ran out of dance moves. Seriously, you couldn't do anything more with your arms? The song itself is catchy and energetic hence topping my top 10 list but nothing more of the film was revealed in the promo. Either way I'm looking forward to the movie and hopefully there is more songs.

I didn't like Dilliwali Girlfriend at first because I thought Pritam got lazy with those electro beats in the beginning but  after downloading the song, it is super catchy. The video has some strange dance moves but I was most confused about why Deepika's shirt is so short? Is there a purpose in her showing her belly? I'm not complaining I'm just curious as to the director's thought process.

The Bombay Talkies music video featuring megastars released yesterday. It is a montage but I don't think it respectfully gives homage to 100 years of Bollywood. Bollywood isn't about standing in one place and having 20 or more people randomly popping up with a different playback voice. Or how about leaving out legends like Amitabh or Lata Mangeshkar in the video. Deewangi Deewangi from Om Shanti Om is what defines Bollywood regardless of what negative connotation or stereotype the industry receives.

The past couple weeks I've talked about how disappointed I was in not being able to like the songs of Go Goa Gone. I think I've come around the corner and started liking Khoon Choos Le and Babaji but I cannot understand the following of Slowly Slowly.

Apparently Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani's music is releasing tomorrow!

Anyways, I think that is all for this week. Please share what you think and I'll be back next week!

Random Bollywood Update - April 20 2013

Hello, I'm trying to do something different again where I try writing a mini newsletter type posts about what has been happening this week in Bollywood. I hope you enjoy the post and come back weekly for a new post.

New Release

Ek Thi Daayan
Last week, I said that I was concerned about the low buzz of the movie affecting the probablity that the movie will become successful. So far reports have been weak but positive which matches the appreciation which the film has received by critics. I was blown away by the theatrical trailer and am intrigued by the uniqueness of the starcast- Emraan, Kalki, Konkana, and Huma. All of them are talented actors which have consistently acted in successful films. The music didn't grow on me as other Vishal Bhardwaj albums but that could be from the competition of the songs from Nautanki Saala and now Aashiqui 2. I want to see the movie so I will recommend catching it in theaters since it is a unique genre with unique starcast.

Hottest Song of the Week - I'm In Love (Neal N Nikki)
My Top 10 Bollywood Songs - See the entire list
#1 Recommended Album - Aashiqui 2

This week has definitely been a massive breakthrough for the songs of Aashiqui 2. I've found myself not getting enough of the songs and having the entire album on repeat. Every song has its intricacies in the melody and delivery of the vocals which makes them truly special as a listener. I've read the reviews of the album and the comparisons with the original Aashiqui and found it to be unfair. The songs of both albums are from different decades and different genres. It is like comparing Shakespeare to J.K. Rowling, both brilliant but because of time one is seen as more prolific and popular. So please just enjoy the music.

The album of Go Goa Gone released this week. I still haven't liked Slowly Slowly but Khoon Choos Le is catchy especially Priya Panchaal's line in the chorus. The other songs I don't think has the potential to become popular.

The other album out is Bombay Talkies. Here I only see potential in Bachchan, the other songs are well composed as the songs of Go Goa Gone but there is so many quality albums releasing with catchy songs that the potential gems in these albums will take alot of time post-release to be recognized.

Another cutesy song from Gippi released called Baby Se Babydoll or something like that. It's nice to hear Udit Narayan again but like I said about Go Goa Gone and Bombay Talkies, the good songs of the album will fall behind from the outstanding songs because of the amount of albums releasing in these few weeks.

Random Talk

I'm actually surprised that Chashme Baddoor is considered a Hit. The trailers were not impressive and the songs were very close to being classified as annoying- only Har Ek Friend and Dhishkyaon Doom remains on my playlist. What is more surprising is that the film didn't really have any star, unless you consider Ali Zafar a star. Even then it's nothing in comparison to Ajay and Sanjay in Rascals or Govinda and Ritiesh in Do Knot Disturb- the last two films directed by David Dhawan, the director of Chashme Baddoor. Rascals was a bad film which justifies its disaster status but Do Knot Disturb had a chance to make money but poor release date devastated the film. Anyways, I'm glad that David Dhawan has been able to get success again.

I'm so confused by the marketing team of Yash Raj Films. Exactly one month until the release of Aurangzeb and only seen the theatrical trailer. Seriously? Then this week they announced Mardaani, Pradeep Sarkar's next film which will feature Rani Mukherji and the release date of Gunday as February 14th, 2014. While no word is given on a supposed film in production directed by Maneesh Sharma and starring Sushant from Kai Po Che and Parineeti Chopra that is expected to release this year. Seriously? Point of the matter is, I'm ready for the songs of Aurangzeb. YRF never goes wrong...well not usually.

I'm really starting to like the songs of Shootout at Wadala. The simplicity makes them enjoyable. Also Kangana Ranaut looks amazing in the Yeh Junoon trailer.

This week I've really started to re-like the songs of Jab We Met. Pritam gave some solid tracks to make a complete experience for the listener. Watch all of the songs by clicking here.

New posters for Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya are out. This looks a typical massy romantic comedy but I'm looking forward to the songs and possibly watching it.

Bang Bang to release on May 1st, 2014!

Govinda will be in Kill Dill, Go Go Go Govinda! haha

On a non-Bollywood note, this week's terrorist attacks in Boston have revealed the possible dangers which can exist from conspiracy theorist. If you are a conspiracy theorist, no one is forcing you to stay in the United States or any other country which you have difficulties with. If you cannot leave, then know that killing innocent individuals does not bring justice to your ideas nor compensates for your skepticism in society. Try to understand your role in this world and the value which you add to its existence. There are alot of problems that exists in the world and they are many many many individuals who work to resolve the problems but the problems never end and never will end. If you see a problem then work to find a solution which adds value not one which terrorizes and harms others. Also you cannot take life too seriously, we're only here for a short period of time with a limited amount of individuals who has some kind of affection for us. My prayers go out to the victims of this week's senseless act.
