Student of the Year - Music Review
Music by: Vishal-Shekhar
Ratta Maar begins with light strumming of the guitar and Vishal Dadlani's humming followed by Shefali Alvarez's smooth entrance. The song build into a chant of Ratta Maar and then interchanging guitar strumming. The song amptly fits the film's school setting based on the lyrics and seems to give an impression that it will be played in the opening credits.
Radha starts with the wonderful Shreya Ghoshal's voice which reminds you of her masterpiece style from DEVDAS. The song adds some techno and tabla with English lyrics. The song is obviously describing the female lead, Alia Bhatt's role of Shanaya. This song is signature Karan Johar with the orchestration matching the desi drums. Udit Narayan's small part in the end takes you back to the 90s for the sure while the English lyrics is catchy.
Ishq Wala Love starts surprisingly with a light guitar almost like a reprise. The violins in the song adds some drama and the heavy but slow tabla adds some suspense. It's really a light romantic song which is a surprise from Karan Johar nonetheless the song is excellent. Soft on ears but not necessarily a song I would expect to be sung like Suraj Hua Madham or Mitwa but you will definitely play it for him/her. Neeti Mohan's soft voice fits the song perfectly. The claps with the repitition of Ishq Wala Love by Shekhar Ravjiani and Salim Merchant along with the chimes gives the image of a moonlit sky with your love.
We've already heard the very fun and catchy Disco Song. The composition of the lyrics roll very easily on the lips and I can see this being sung by many. The light disco beats behind the Disco Deewane chorus is very fun to listen to by itself. The solos between the choruses are even better and does not leave you bored while listening. Definitely have to give high praises to Vishal-Shekhar for utilizing so many elements including the Disco Deewane sample to create this superb song.
Kukkad starts with a rooster? Lol anyways the Punjabi tunes and bass kicks in as well as Shahid Mallya energetic voice. This song is a step away from we've already heard in the album as Shahid's voice is more baritone and the song uses more electronic techno/club beats. The English lyrics midway through the song once again is signature Karan Johar but the song itself isn't as I think this is a weak song of the album.
Vele has the heavy bass heard in the theatrical trailer. The chorus of the song is extremely catchy as well as the flute of some sort, I don't know what it is. Shekhar Ravjiani's lines are delivered crisply. The hip-hop portion has another set of English lyrics which could be very catchy with listeners.
Mashup of the Year is basically a remix of all six songs and wraps up the album very nicely. Expect to hear it in the clubs despite it having the same template as many club songs.
Overall, the album is signature Karan Johar with very youthful and modern music. This is one you won't miss even if you try for the next few months.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal - Music Review
Starting with Dariya Ho, I'm extremely impressed and pleased that it is a romantic has desi melody with a strong vocal backing. The song really does give the charm of the 90s especially with the splendid usage of the flutes and the rhyming of the lyrics. One thing I don't understand is why people dislike the song because the guitar background has a faint resemblance to Chaiya Chaiya from DIL SE? Nonetheless, this is a must listen for anyone liking the classic 90s melody.
Seeing Mamta Sharma as singer for the song I'm not expecting much other than an itemish number which is exactly what is delivered. What is different with this item song is the intervals between the chorus and the next segment of the lyrics which are nicely composed. The hook line is catchy but not overburdening so I would recommend even if you don't usually like item songs.
Zor Naache starts somewhat like parts of HUM DIL NE CHUPKE SANAM which is strange since Keerthi Sagathia is the only comparison between both albums. The song is okay nothing really to boast. Probably good background music.
In Ishq Ki Dafli Baje, it's good to hear Babul Supriyo after a while. This is another full out desi tune but just like Zor Naache this one doesn't stand out. The bhangra and the ring rang chants are good but the composing of the instruments and lyrics are even better. It's worth a listen but is not the highlight of the album.
Ringa Ringa sounds fairly similar Ishq Ki Dafli Baje since they have the same fast pace dholak/bhangra beat going. I wouldn't really be fussy listening to this one just because it sounds similar to songs we've heard before. Ujjaini is very energetic in this song which reminds me of Are Pritam Pyaare.
The theme song is basically Ringa Ringa, I would not go for it.
Overall, this album is Indian at its core but Dariya Ho is a must listen while Desi Mem is an item song worth considering. The rest will have a hard time standing out with the crowd of new music releasing in these few weeks.
Dariya Ho - Shadaab Faridi, Monali Thakur 9/10

Ringa Ringa - Ujjaini, Sarosh Sami 5/10

Overall: 6.3/10
