Random Bollywood Update - April 27 2013
Hello, I'm trying to do something different again where I try writing a mini newsletter type posts about what has been happening this week in Bollywood. I hope you enjoy the post and come back weekly for a new post.
New Release
Aashiqui 2 Movie Recommendation
Aashiqui 2 isn't really a sequel of Aashiqui but it follows up well in the premise of having newcomers, melodious songs, and innocent romance. The plotline does have similarities to Abhimaan but which film doesn't have similar things to other films. The trailer promises good acting and amazing cinematography to the smash-hit songs. The newcomers doesn't bring star value but the good reviews and positive acceptance from the audience means that the story and songs are the value to film. I'm on the fence about whether to recommend watching it in theater or on DVD, either way this is a must-WATCH release for the year.
Raanjhanaa Theatrical Trailer Review
Can this movie have one more A please? Jokes aside Dhanush looks like a perfect fit for his role while putting in a complete performance in the trailer. I was surprised to see Abhay Deol being featured in the movie while Sonam Kapoor looks graceful during the dance scene but I question how well she acts in the film. Cinematography and direction looks outstanding while the music is clasically splendid. Cannot wait for the A.R. Rahman music trailers!
Ramaiya Vasta Vaiya Theatrical Trailer Review
Go Desi Cool? I don't get it. The movie looks like an innocent rom-com with great choreography and cinematography by Prabhudeva. Girish Kumar looks like Aditya Roy Kapoor from Aashiqui 2. I don't understand his curly hair or why he is surfing then on a farm. Shruti Hassan looks pretty. And the Atif Aslam teaser songs especially the last one could give Tum Hi Ho a run for Song of the Year.
New Music
Hottest Song of the Week - Say Shava Shava (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham)
My Top 10 Bollywood Songs - See the entire list
#1 Recommended Album - Aashiqui 2
Aashiqui 2 is still my pick for the week. These songs are the perfect combination for a solid album. I've been hooked on Hum Mar Jayenge all week, Tulsi Kumar's delivery is amazing. Aurangzeb's finally released song is a smash-hit energetic track that should not be missed while Dilliwali Girlfriend is making Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani the next sought after album.
Gippi Music Review
Vishal-Shekhar rarely disappoints and with Gippi they keep that track record. The songs are young and peppy which is what the movie demands. Baby Doll and Pehn Di Takki are becoming my favorites, We Are Like This Only is also well done but I don't see myself singing. My recommendation is to SKIP the album and buy the single songs of either Baby Doll, Pehn Di Takki, or We Are Like This Only.
Random Talk
The Barbadiyaan trailer for Aurangzeb revealed one thing- Sasheh Agha ran out of dance moves. Seriously, you couldn't do anything more with your arms? The song itself is catchy and energetic hence topping my top 10 list but nothing more of the film was revealed in the promo. Either way I'm looking forward to the movie and hopefully there is more songs.
I didn't like Dilliwali Girlfriend at first because I thought Pritam got lazy with those electro beats in the beginning but after downloading the song, it is super catchy. The video has some strange dance moves but I was most confused about why Deepika's shirt is so short? Is there a purpose in her showing her belly? I'm not complaining I'm just curious as to the director's thought process.
The Bombay Talkies music video featuring megastars released yesterday. It is a montage but I don't think it respectfully gives homage to 100 years of Bollywood. Bollywood isn't about standing in one place and having 20 or more people randomly popping up with a different playback voice. Or how about leaving out legends like Amitabh or Lata Mangeshkar in the video. Deewangi Deewangi from Om Shanti Om is what defines Bollywood regardless of what negative connotation or stereotype the industry receives.
The past couple weeks I've talked about how disappointed I was in not being able to like the songs of Go Goa Gone. I think I've come around the corner and started liking Khoon Choos Le and Babaji but I cannot understand the following of Slowly Slowly.
Apparently Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani's music is releasing tomorrow!
Anyways, I think that is all for this week. Please share what you think and I'll be back next week!
